Jules Van de Leene (1887-1962) - « Huy » Épreuve d'artiste

Little bit about the artist:
Jules Van de Leene (Ixelles, May 9, 1887 - Auderghem, 1962) was a Belgian painter.
Showing early signs of talent, he studied at the Academies of Ixelles and Brussels (under Meunier and Montald). His professional painting career began in 1913. Van de Leene lived for a time in Damme but later settled in Auderghem, where he had a house built at 19 Bocq Street. He was a member of the local artists' association, Cercle Artistique d'Auderghem.

He painted figures (female nudes, kitchen maids, a violin maker...), portraits, interiors, still lifes, and landscapes. He worked equally well in oil paint and watercolor. Van de Leene also made etchings. A notable etching depicts a crucifix on a pillar in the ruined church of Nieuwpoort, with a dramatic cloud-filled sky in the background. He is a typical example of a valuable, technically skilled "small master" from the early 19th century and the interwar period.
During his lifetime, in 1949, a street in Auderghem was named after him. In 1935, he exhibited at "La Petite Galerie" in Brussels alongside Fernand Toussaint. From December 4 to 19, 1938, he exhibited at the town hall of Ronse.
