CAREER
- Hubert Underwood was born in Ash, Surrey, in 1892.
- He enlisted into the 2nd battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1910 and his MIC shows entry to France on 20th December 1914. The papers show that he transferred to the Royal Engineers in August 1915. He spent the rest of the War in France, before returning to the UK in July 1918 and being demobilized in 1919. He joined the Post Office in 1921.
- The 2nd battalion RIF served in France until November 1915, when it was transferred to Salonika, but Underwood had left the battalion before then. During its time in France, the battalion took part in the action at St Eloi and the 2nd Battle of Ypres (= 17 April – 25 May 1915).
- The ISM was awarded in 1954, as an Overseer, General Post Office, Kettering.
- The coinage head SC was introduced in 1930. Probably Underwood joined at the time of the General Strike in 1926 and so would have received the medal in 1935.
