The antoninianus was introduced earlier in the 3rd century as a higher-denomination silver coin and is distinguished on male imperial portraits by the radiate crown. No specific obverse or reverse type has been provided for this example, so a more precise numismatic attribution is not stated.Valerian ruled during the Crisis of the Third Century, when the Roman Empire faced considerable military pressure, political instability and economic difficulties. His reign was shared with his son Gallienus, an arrangement intended to improve the administration and defence of an empire threatened on several frontiers. Valerian's reign ended dramatically in A.D. 260 when he was captured by the Sasanian king Shapur I.Antoniniani were produced in large quantities within the organised Roman imperial minting system and circulated widely as everyday currency. During the 3rd century their silver content progressively declined, reflecting broader changes in Roman monetary and economic conditions. Coins nevertheless remained an important means of distributing imperial portraits, titles and official imagery throughout the provinces. As a coin originally intended for everyday monetary circulation, this antoninianus forms a tangible connection to the economic and political life of the Roman Empire during one of the most challenging periods of its 3rd-century history."
