A Blue and White 'Scholar' Bowl – Jiajing Period, Ming Dynasty (1522–1566)A finely potted Chinese blue and white porcelain bowl dating to the Jiajing period (1522–1566) of the Ming dynasty. The exterior is delicately painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a continuous landscape scene depicting a scholar riding on horseback, accompanied by an attendant carrying a ceremonial banner. The mountainous setting, trees, and rocky outcrops evoke the idealized landscapes associated with the literati tradition, celebrating scholarship, virtue, and the pursuit of knowledge. The interior is simply yet elegantly decorated with a solitary standing scholar painted in the center of the well, providing a refined balance to the richly ornamented exterior. The recessed base bears a stylized four-character auspicious inscription, most likely reading (Fu gui jia qi), which may be translated as "A fine vessel for wealth and prosperity." Rather than an imperial reign mark, this type of auspicious inscription was commonly employed on Ming export and domestic wares as a blessing for good fortune and elegant living. The bowl displays the characteristic qualities of mid-Ming porcelain, including its lively cobalt decoration, well-balanced proportions, and elegant painterly style.Dimensions:Diameter: 12 cmHeight: 5.5 cmCondition:In very good condition, with very minor rim fritting typical of the ware and a couple baking flaws. No damage! Please examine the images carefully. Small imperfections, kiln-firing flaws and small damages are not always described in detail. The written condition report is indicative only; the photographs provide the definitive and binding description of the item’s condition. Shipping method: The item is securely packed and shipped with insurance without the wooden stand or miniature vase.
