A Fine Yixing Zisha ‘Squirrel and Grapes’ TeapotHe Ji () mark, attributed to the workshop of Zhao Songting (1853–1934)China, late Qing dynasty (19th century)An elegant and finely crafted Yixing zisha teapot, embodying the refined aesthetic of late Qing literati taste. The teapot is decorated in the classic “Songshu Putao” ( – Squirrel and Grapes) motif, a popular auspicious theme symbolising abundance, fertility, and longevity.Of cylindrical form and made from zini (purple-brown clay), the teapot displays a warm, natural patina developed through use. The spout and handle are modelled as gnarled vine branches, while the body is richly adorned with applied grape leaves and clusters executed in relief using the tiehua (applied decoration) technique. Multiple squirrels are perched among the vines, animated and seamlessly integrated into the composition. The flat lid fits neatly and is surmounted by a branch-form finial, continuing the naturalistic theme. The teapot bears multiple marks indicative of a respected workshop tradition:Inside the lid: an impressed oval seal reading He Ji (, “Crane Mark”), a documented studio mark associated with the workshop of the noted master Zhao Songting (1853–1934), renowned for his refined “scholar-style” teapots.Base: a four-character square seal reading Songshu Mingyi (), which may be translated as “The Renowned Essence of the Squirrel,” reflecting the late Qing artistic concept of yi (), or expressive intent. This teapot exemplifies the combination of technical mastery, symbolic richness, and literati sensibility that characterises high-quality Yixing production of the late 19th century.REFERENCEPlease see a similar shaped teapot in: Yixing: Teapots for Europe | Patrice Valfre | 2000 Page 202 object 137.
