A rare stepped 'Longquan' blush celadon glazed censer with Foo Lion cover, Yuan dynasty 14th century. The base of the censer is shaped like a square altar with in the middle section decorated with embossed geometrical patterns like a fence. The inside has an cylindercal recess for the placement of incense. The cover is decorated with a modeled Foo Lion holding a ribbon, with it's right paw on a brocade ball. The lion is hollow so the incense smoke rises up through the mouth of the Foo lion when the lid is closed. Import of Longquan ware to Japan started during the Yuan dynasty by Buddhist monks. The Tenryu-ji temple in Kyoto had the sole-right for import and distribution of Longquan ware. Thus old Longquan ware is often called Tenryu ware in Japanese. This censer probably was sold true this temple. Acquired in Japan from a private collection and comes with a wooden box and silk wrapping cloth.
