Japanese woodblock print "Two "koi" carps" by Ohara Koson, signed under the other artist name, Shôson. Ôban-tate-e size. Publisher Watanabe Shôzaburô . Please check the label on the back : sold by the famous collector and merchant, Ernest Le Véel (1874-1951), probably in the 20s or 30s.
Condition is very good overall.
In order to allow full check of the condition of the item, the print has been removed from its frame. The wood framing being original, the operation required tearing the cardboard on the back, damaging the paper label of the merchant Le Véél in the process.
***Ernest Stanislas Le Véel (1874-1951) belonged to a great dynasty of Parisian dealers. Specializing in paintings, modern engravings, and porcelain, he opened a gallery on Rue de Seine in 1895 and then moved to Quai Malaquais in 1926. A fervent defender of Japonism, he became one of the capital's greatest dealers of Japanese prints and formed associations with major collectors, including Edmond de Goncourt. As an enlightened amateur, he took an interest in a wide variety of fields with discerning taste and rubbed shoulders with numerous artists, including Claude Monet, Maurice de Vlaminck, or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
