I have here for sale a book entitled A NARRATIVE OF TRAVELS ON THE AMAZON AND RIO NEGRO, With an Account of the Native Tribes, and Observations on the Climate, Geology, and Natural History of the Amazon Valley by ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE, With a Portrait of the Author, a Map, and full-page Illustrations With a Biographical Introduction by the Editor.  Second Edition published by Ward, Lock and Co., London, New York, and Melbourne, in 1889.  First published in 1853.  Released as part of The Minerva Library of Famous Books Edited by G T Bettany.  Here we have a narrative of Alfred Russel Wallace's journeys over a four year period and of the impressions that excited him.  Wallace was the co-discoverer with Charles Darwin of the principle of natural selection as the main agent in the evolution of species and the last four chapters are devoted to Natural History.  There is a full-page b/w portrait of Wallace on the frontispiece, a full-page Map of the Amazon and parts of its Basin visited by Mr Wallace at the beginning of the book, with a further 14 full-page b/w plates.  

Half bound tan leather on marbled hardboards with wear to the leather and along the edges.  Four raised bands with a black title block, gilt lettering and gilt decoration on the spine.  Wear to the leather on the spine.  Marbled endpapers and page edges.  Names of previous owners on the prelim.  Light foxing to pages.  All pages are firm and the book is in very good condition.  xiv, 363 pages, plus publisher's catalogue 4 pages.  18.5 x 12.5 cm.
