With 2 engraved title vignettes by N. van der Meer.Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden], apud Corn. van Hoogeveen jun., 1774-1779. 4o (257 x 203 mm). [XXVIII], 502; [II], 68 p.Tree marbled calf, gold tooled. On the covers a border along the edge of a flower and leaf roll. In the centre the coat of arms of Rotterdam in brighter gold. Spine with 5 raised bands. In compartment 2 gilt title on red morocco label. The other compartments a fleuron in the centre and in the corners other fleurons. Board edges with a flower and leaf roll. Edges coloured with blue paste with various patterns. It is dated 1803.Petrus Burmannus secundus [Pieter Burman] (1714-1778) was a classical scolar, like his famous uncle. As a scolar unfortunately he did't have the qualities of his uncle (he edited his commentaries on Claudianus and Vergilius), but as a neolatin poet he is highly esteemed by D.J. van Lennep and Hofman Peerlkamp.Provenance: School prize book for George Hendrik Wachter Pzn. (1791-1864), who graduated at the Groningen university on a medical thesis. He specialized in ophtalmology.
