Konrad is a young boy, a servant to a cruel tavern owner in a small village in the Empire. He has no concept of the outside world, and has no friends until, while collecting firewood in the Forest of Shadows one autumn morning , he saves the life of Elyssa Kastring, daughter of Wilhelm Kastring, landlord of the village, when she is attacked by a Beastman.
They become friends, and Elyssa names him Konrad when he tells her he has no name: she is the first person he has spoken to. Konrad is shunned by the villagers: he has one green eye and one gold eye, and his gold eye has the gift of foresight.
Elyssa and he grow up together, no-one knowing of their friendship, even becoming secret lovers. When Konrad recives two visions: one of an aged Elyssa betraying him, and one of a young Elyssa dead, and after a Ghostly Rider armoured in bronze visits
the village, Konrad resolves to leave the village. He sets forth into the forest, but that night the village is attacked by a group of Beastmen, Orcs and Skaven.
