Classic 17th-century history of the Dutch Republic, written under the pseudonym “M. de La Neuville” by the French scholar and critic Adrien Baillet (1649-1706), better known today as the biographer of Descartes. The work covers the history of the United Provinces from the Twelve Years’ Truce of 1609 to the Peace of Nijmegen (1678), with detailed treatment of politics, diplomacy and warfare in the age of the House of Orange. The four volumes are:Tome I. Depuis la trêve de 1609, où finit Grotius, jusqu’à nôtre tems.Tome II. Depuis la mort du Prince Maurice.Tome III. Depuis la mort du Prince d’Orange Frédéric-Henri.Tome IV. Depuis la révolution causée par les guerres qui ont précédé la paix de Nimègue.First edition, as confirmed by Quérard and Cioranescu (Suppl. litt. II, 653; Cioranescu 9299).ProvenanceAll four title-pages carry a neat 18th-century inscription of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre de Montier-la-Celle near Troyes (dated 1777) and the personal ex-libris of François Laurent Dumay, Benedictine priest, dated 1791Attractive, coherent monastic provenance for the complete set.Collation12mo (approx. 16.5 × 10 cm). Pagination as in the standard descriptions of the first edition:Vol. I: (24) ff., 440 pp.Vol. II: (3) ff., 450 pp.Vol. III: (3) ff., 330 pp.Vol. IV: (4) ff., 551 pp.(Occasional minor mispaginations as usual in this edition, but text continuous; not checked against every line of the online scans.)BindingContemporary full mottled calf, richly gilt spines with raised bands and floral tools, contrasting red morocco title-labels and smaller tomaison labels, red sprinkled edges, with a fine gilt roll along the board edges (see photos).A good, fully uniform 17th-century Parisian binding set, still very decorative on the shelf.ConditionBindings sound and complete, with the expected wear: rubbing to corners and edges, small chips to headcaps, a few surface marks; one or two boards with slightly darker old stains (see overviews).Red edges slightly dulled but still even; gilt rolls around the boards and along the edges well preserved.Internally generally clean and crisp for a book of this period: some leaves with light browning or spotting; occasional small marginal stains. As noted in the auction description:– Vol. II with an old damp-stain in part of the volume, mostly marginal, paper still solid;– Vol. III with a marginal wormtrack or a few small wormholes near the end, just touching the printed frame in places but only minimally affecting the text.my.arenbergauctions.comNo modern annotations; only the 18th-century Benedictine inscriptions on the titles.A complete, first-edition set of one of the principal early French histories of the Dutch Republic, in attractive contemporary bindings and with good monastic provenance – a solid addition to any collection on the history of the Low Countries, Louis XIV and the wars leading to the Peace of Nijmegen.ShippingThe four volumes will be carefully packed together, fully insured and sent with tracking.
